On my way to dinner during a recent visit to New York City, I passed a man sitting in the doorway of a church.

Reflecting back on the moment, I recall that he appeared to be a businessman dressed in nice slacks and a button-down shirt. Beside him in the doorway was a travel bag and a small folding luggage cart. He seemed to be just sitting there waiting for someone.

He was just someone I noticed briefly in passing as happens to all of us everyday and I didn't think much of it at the time.

After dinner, about 90 minutes later, I passed the same church and noticed the man again, but this time he really got my attention. He was now sleeping in the doorway. Curled up with his head on his travel bag, his shoes where off and tucked beside him with the luggage cart against the door. He had a sleep mask over his eyes, apparently to keep the bright light from above from disturbing his sleep.

I now couldn't help but wonder what his story was. What was the circumstance that caused this man to have to sleep in the streets of New York?
