All of us struggle with the everyday temptations of materialism, extravagance and vice, which are reinforced by the modern mass media.
Yet some people resist these influences.

Even today, Old Order Mennonites and Brethren cling to their uncomplicated ways of life, which are centered on strong religious convictions, strong families and hard work. They resist the modern conveniences and allurements of mainstream culture.

In Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, particularly around Dayton where this photo was taken, we see these dignified “Plain Folk” riding in horse-drawn buggies, or on bicycles, and dressed in simple clothes, often black and white.

As separate from us as they seem, they are a vital and affirming part of life here.

While some may judge their lifestyle to be extreme, perhaps these beautiful people can teach us something: That one can find the right path in our chaotic world by ignoring the madding crowd and following a road less traveled.
